2016-2017 Semester 2

Week 12

4/3/17

Today, the people that had gone to Orange County to participate in the FRC Regionals came back, and they talked to the class about their experiences while they were there. Our team ended up winning 3 different awards, one of which included an invite to the FRC nationals championship, which would be sponsored by NASA. Afterwards, Erin and I went dumpster diving again, and then started purring away the wood that we had salvaged.

4/4/17

Today, Erin and I went dumpster diving one final time, and then we worked some more on putting away the stuff that we had salvaged and throwing away the old, dmaller pieces that we had accumulated in the shop over the past few years. Today's haul basically amounted to the combined finds ovver the past few days; we managed to salvage about $200 worth of fairly nice condition plywood and boards, most of which was completely untouched, with even th tags still stapled onto the sides. We salvaged so much that we had to get a janitor come and haul it for us with the flatbed truck. Afterschool, while I was charging my phone in Dr. Neato's room because I had not gotten to charge my phone in mr. Platt's class, I worked some more at organizing the wood, and basically managed to get everything set neatly aside.

4/5/17

Today Christian Hürlimann and the rest of the Swiss FRC team came to visit us at CV, and we got to eat some delicious Swiss chocolate. I didn't particularly like the texture of the chocolate, as it was a bit too soft and chewey as compared to something like frozen Hersheys milk chocolate, which is harder and more brittle, but nonetheless, the taste was at least at the level of Toblereone chocolate. As today was Wednesday, we had a new Wednesday Challenge, and this time around, the challenge was completely new. The object of the challenge was to derive pi using measurements that we took from a circle or circulaar object in the classsroom. Our team, which was the usual squad of myself, Connor, Erin and Keilah, chose one of the glue containers due to the fact that the lids were able to be twisted without it coming loose or getting tighter. I was really close, and ended up getting a percent error of something insane like .0000036%.

Wednesday Challenge 11: Deriving Pi

4/6/17

Today Erin and I finished organizing our salvaged wood for the most part. We put everything aside and then threw away most of the small scraps, but we couldn't put some of the largest sheets of plywood away because there was simply no place to put it. We are thinking of making another lumber storage rack after robot season is over to better organize the wood. Afterwards, we started helping Keilah on his task, which was makinga cox to ship Athanatos, the FRC robot, to the nationals.

4/7/17

Today we received the results for 2 Wednesday Challenges: the Potato Chip Wednesday Challenge and the Pi Wednesday Challenge. For the Potato Chip Wednesday Challenge, Keilah's group and the group that designed his box won. For the Pi Wednesday Challenge, every group except for the winning group was disqualified because we didn't write our answers using proper significant figures. Afterwards, Keilah, Erin and I worked some more on the robot shipping crate. Mr. Miller told us that instead of making a completely new box fort the robot, we would just be modifying the old box to fit the robot and the batteries.
